Relative Transgressions Versus Absolute Transgressions

Here we discuss the Parush, someone who imposes himself extra strigencies in areas where there is a difference of opinion as to what the law is. When we transgress there is damage to our soul; if the sages said it is okay to do something, but one opinion said it's not then it's okay for us to do it. But what about the damage to our soul? When is it okay to take on extra stringenices and when would that be considered nothing more than hypocrisy?
